Why do I need so many FTP accounts for my website?

So, I was checking out web hosting packages, specifically ones at inmotion hosting. They have packages that offer 1000, 2000 and an unlimited amount of FTP accounts. My question is: why do I need so many? I mean, I would only use 1 to upload, right? Or does it mean that 1000 or 2000 or an unlimited amount of users can download from the website at once?

You could give or sell ftp access to other users. Then they can use it to exchange (upload and download) large files. Not so popular anymore since things like torrents let you do the same for free.

Or, if you have multiple ppl developing the website, give each their own ftp. Then you can see who modified a file. If you have 50 people working on a large open source project, and new people coming all the time, 1000 accounts in not an unreasonable amount. It’s virtually free for the webhost company to provide them, so….
