Freelance Web Design?
Hey. I’ve decided to become a freelance web designer and I’m currently designing my website. I have the web design skills, but the thing that I am lacking in is the business skills. I’m going to be offering quotes based on the work that they want done. What sort of prices should I charge? How should I work out what I charge per project?
I’m also going to have a support forum which customers get access to when they pay for my services. I’m also considering letting people who have not paid for my services join, for a small fee. How much should this be?
I’m going to charge less for sites that include my link at the bottom of each page. Is there any security that I can apply to the pages to prevent anyone from going against this agreement? Also, how much less shoul I charge them for this?
Last question… is there any free application that I can use to allow them to edit text and images easily within their website?

In reverse order of your questions:
GIMP is free if they want to edit graphics.
They’re going to pay you to create a site for them. Do you think they will have time to make alterations to remove your logo? Sooner or later they will want modifications are you will be first choice if you did a good job. If they didn’t think you’d done a good job in the first place they’d have no hesitation in bad mouthing you. Either way verbal recommendations will work far better than hyperlinks.
Hints & tips forum. Do you think you’ll have time to run something like that? You’ll be too busy creating and support the sites you’ve already got commissioned.
Charge by the hour. If something you do takes more time, then let the client know. Hide nothing in your billing. If client has supplied layouts, graphics and copy and all you have to do is assemble it into a page it will take you far less time than if you had researched it all yourself. Start at $25 an hour. If you get a good reputation and get more work than you can cope with, raise your price. Good work will be its own reward.
