Gaming Design and Programming?
I’m trying to get into the gaming industry but I want to get into Computer Information Systems FIRST!!!! just to get a feel for the programming languages (you know have a foot in the door at least). I figured I could get my Associates Degree in CIS learn C++, Java and HTML (for web design on the side), then transfer my knowledge from there into the gaming degree @ Devry or something then step into the gaming field. I just want to make sure I am making the right steps or should I be looking into software engineering or something else. Someone help please classes for CIS starts in 9 days so I need to be pointed in the right direction if anyone able to help.
Well, first off, what Etzeitet said is true – everyone wants to do game design because it’s fun! Unfortunately, since everyone wants in, it’s also very difficult to get a start in.
Aside from that, here’s my two cents as a developer in the wild (I don’t do games, but it was definitely something I wanted to do when I was in school):
1) CIS degrees aren’t as helpful when it comes to hardcore programming like you’ll probably need to do in the gaming industry (it has a place but game design ain’t it). Things like algorithmic analysis and proper design are important, and they’re things that aren’t focused on in Computer Information Systems. What you really want to look at is Computer Science programs. They’re more intense, yes, but they’ll give you the background you need: analysis of the best design patterns; analysis of algorithms and data structures; and, most importantly, the kind of math skills you need for not only dealing with all that analysis, but also for understanding what goes on in the graphics end of things, if that’s something you’re interested in (graphics programming can be very math-intensive).
2) Others might have a different take on this, but from what I’ve seen in the time I’ve been working development, I haven’t seen a single person with a degree from a school like Devry. Not trying to be discouraging, but those types of schools have a sort of negative image, and even if they’re totally awesome, employers will shy away from candidates with a degree from there. All in all, you’re better off with even a state school (just make sure wherever you go is accredited with a reputable accreditation board). If you’re interested, take a look at the following Google search (or similar searches) – it’s worth a glance:
http://www.google.com/search?q=is+devry+a+waste+of+money&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
If you’re dead-set on Devry, for whatever reason, take a look at this question someone asked on Yahoo Answers:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100508170340AACOQtK
3) Aside from all of that, your plan of study – C++/Java/HTML – is pretty solid. If I had to set a specific order for you to study on your own, I’d probably do it this way -
a) Java’s easy, has a ton of starter material, and a pretty decent community. Start there.
b) C++ is a definite must if you’re entering the gaming field; the vast majority of work is done with C or C++.
c) HTML/Javascript are easy to pick up in no time, but I wouldn’t recommend the combo as a starter language, since, while Javascript is a wonderfully robust language, it has some really nice (and therefore really complicated) features that other languages don’t have. In short, Javascript gives you enough rope to hang yourself three times over and can be rough on a beginner since it’s not as rigid as, say, C++ or Java.
