What is a pacemaker?
Although it only weighs about an ounce, a pacemaker contains a powerful battery, electronic circuits and computer memory that together generate electronic signals. The stimulation signals or pulses, are carried along thin wires, isolated or potential customers to the heart muscle. The signals cause the heart muscle causing contractions begin a heartbeat.
The pacemaker is implanted just below the collarbone in a procedure that takes about two hours. Is programmed to stimulate the heart to a predetermined rhythm, and can be adjusted at any time. routine evaluation, sometimes even by telephone, said that the pacemaker is working properly and monitors the battery life, which generally ranges from five to ten years …
When do you need a pacemaker?
The most common cause a pacemaker is a heartbeat that slows to a healthy rate, or bradycardia. A pacemaker resets the heart rate at an appropriate pace, ensuring adequate blood and deliver oxygen to the brain and other body parts …
Pacemakers
Three basic types exist to serve different purposes:
Of a single chamber pacemaker: – In a single chamber pacemaker, only one cable (Cord stimulation) is placed in a chamber of the heart. Sometimes it is the upper chamber, or atrium. Other times it is the lower chamber, or ventricle.
Dual chamber pacemakers: – Dual-chamber pacemakers, the cables are placed in two chambers of the heart. A cable steps of the atrium and ventricle steps. This approach is more compatible with the natural rhythm of the heart. This type of pacemaker can coordinate the function between the atria and ventricles.
Rate-Responsive Pacemakers: – These have sensors that automatically adjust to changes in physical activity of the individual.
Other devices: – Some devices such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), designed primarily for other purposes, can function as pacemakers in certain situations.
When using a pacemaker?
Pacemakers can be prescribed by a number of conditions, including: –
Bradycardia: A condition in which the heart beats too slowly, causing symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness or fainting. Bradycardia can be caused by wear of age or conditions such as sick sinus syndrome (SSS) or heart block.
Atrial fibrillation: A common heart rhythm disorder in which the upper chambers of the heart beat rapidly and chaotically. Sometimes people with atrial fibrillation also may have slow rhythms. Medications used to control atrial fibrillation may result in slow rhythms that are treated with pacemaker.
Heart Error: A condition in which the heartbeat is not sufficient to supply a normal amount of blood and oxygen to the brain and other body parts. A special pacemaker can be carefully programmed to increase the strength of muscle contractions in the heart. This is called "biventricular stimulation" therapy or "resynchronization.
Syncope: A condition known as the common faint, is generally not serious. Some patients weak when your heart rate becomes very slow. For a small percentage of people suffering from severe and frequent fainting spells, a pacemaker can keep the heart rate deceleration to the point faint.
Dual-chamber pacemakers for heart patients better
Monday, Jan. 3 (HealthDay News) – Dual-chamber pacemakers may be more expensive than single-chamber models, but it's worth it because they reduce the risk of hospitalization and disability, as a new study.
"Most people in the United States [who need an artificial pacemaker] receive dual-chamber pacemaker," said study co-author, Dr. David J. Cohen, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. However, he added, "The profitability of dual chamber pacemakers had not been studied. "
The findings are published online January 04, Circulation. For the study, Cohen and his colleagues used four years of data from 2,010 patients in a clinical trial that requires a pacemaker due to a condition called sick sinus syndrome, in which the sinus node – The heart of "natural" pacemaker – becomes defective. Then projected the results of the trials during the life of a patient …
