To upgrade/fix or purchase a new computer?
I have a pc that I bought in 2/05. In the last six months I have had to start from scratch twice. Added more memory. Friend suggested I put in a new internal hard drive. I also get this “no input signal” message, could be hard drive prob or video card problem. Not sure whether to get new hard drive or just buy new. We don’t game and kids sometimes download music. Just need basic computer. Any suggestions?

hope this extra info helps
You didn’t give much information about your machine.
I’d say consider getting an HP or an Acer machine.
They will probably end up cheaper than you would spend to keep fixing that one.
I used to built or have my machines built, but now, it’s not really worth it.
I’ve tried many machines and the HP and Acer machines have been very solid machines. Dells have not.
Just get a warranty for a few years, and you’ll be fine.
A dual-core, with 2-3Gb and a 320-500 hard drive can be purchased for around the 300$.
Getting a new motherboard, video card and hard drive for an older machine, would cost you more than this, plus the service fees which could take the technician hours to install/test/etc. to find what the problem is.
And you’d end up with a machine that would probably be a lot faster anyways (and will last you many years)
ADDITIONAL ANSWER
I just looked at your specs, and from this information, sadly, your machine is really not a good investment for repair.
It’s an old processor that’s now very slow (compared to even the cheapest newer ones), you would have to get at least 1 Gb of RAM to make it barely decent (XP does work with 512RAM but it’s very slow compared).
Even the 60Gb hard drive wouldn’t even be worth using as an external drive these days unless for a “small” backup drive.
Just updating these, RAM could be 50$-100$ (older RAM is more expensive than newer RAM). A 500Gb Hard drive would be about 100$, and if the problem is something else, such as the motherboard (another 50-100$), or video card (another 30-50$ minimum), and your power unit could also be the/a problem, so that`s another 30-50$, plus the service (could be 50-200$), you are paying more than for a new machine, and it being old, it still could break down in another way.
And then you can’t know if something else might break, or if all the new parts are going to play nice with the others.
So even for basic computing, you’d still waste the time to have this machine fixed, and the new parts. You’ll end up regretting it.
And as far as Vista goes (if you do get a new machine that would have it), I have 2 machines that has it, and I’ve not have any trouble with it, so don’t believe all the hype.
The only problem you could have would be if you have a old printer and you can’t find Vista drivers for it, but so far, I’ve not had problems with that either. Just make sure that you have at least 2Gb of RAM (that’s what I have) and it’s been fine.
Even for basic things, you`ll enjoy the faster boot-up, opening all software at 2-10 times faster, etc.
Also… you mention kids downloading music… better be sure that it’s legal… I’ve had to fix a lot of machines because people let their kids (or they themselves) download stuff which turned out to be viruses. And illegal downloads can get you in trouble…
I hope this helps.
