What are the differences in the different types of computer memory / RAM?
I was looking at the Walmart website for their 1 gig memory chips… http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=423259 . They range from $28.48 to $69.97 and it looks like they offer 3 catagory types, SDRAM, DDR, and DDR2. I currently have 1 gig in my computer and want to upgrade to 2 gig. Do they have to match? Is one type better than the other? Why? Thanks.
I ran the scan at www.crucial.com and it showed I only have 512mb DDR type. The 1 gig DDR at Walmart is $62, but the 1 gig DDR2 type is about $25. I know I can’t mix them, but would it work better if I bought 2 of the 1 gig DDR2 types for $50 and just remove the 512 DDR type I currently have? Will they work in my computer?
I just realized that the system scan said I currently have DDR PC2-5200 type memory. Is this the same as the DDR2 type?
Did the scan tell you how many RAM slots your motherboard has? If not, it should have at least 2. So buy 2 sticks of the 1GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 RAM that you need for your computer. Get rid of the 512MB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 RAM that you have currently – sell it or give it to a friend. Your computer will run much faster with more RAM. Windows XP will only recognize 2GB of RAM so you are maxed out at 2GB. Unless you have Windows XP x64 which can recognize 4GB of RAM. If that’s the case, buy 2 sticks of 2GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 RAM to max out. If for some reason you only have one RAM slot on your motherboard, return the unopened extra that you bought. HTH
