History of social networking websites

Introduction

Social networking sites can be defined as sites that allow users to create a profile that will be published within a closed system. Social networking sites allow users to display some of the other users communicate and enabling them to see the lists of other members who are within the system. It should be noted that the main objective behind the creation of a social networking website is that the connections people have pre-existing. Social networking sites have also been created with the purpose of initiating friendships among strangers. (Acquisti and Gross, 2006)

Users who join social networking sites are necessary to make a profile of themselves by filling out a form. After filling out forms, users are supposed to give information about their personality traits and personal appearances. Some social networking websites require photos but most of them give details about age, preferences, likes and dislikes. Some social networking sites like Facebook allow users to customize their profiles to add multimedia content. (Geroimenko and Chen, 2007)

History of social networking websites

The first sign of social networking sites was witnessed in 1997 through the formation of a certain company called Sixdegrees.com. The company was the first of its kind, it allows the user a list of your profiles, provide a list of friends and then contact them. However, the company did very well and finally closed three years later. The reason is that many people use the Internet at that time had formed many social networks so there is little room to maneuver. To be sure There were other elements that hinted at the social networking Web sites. For example, dating sites users must give their profiles, but could not share other people's websites. In addition, there were some web sites that link former classmates, but the lists can not be shared with others. (Cassidy, 2006)

After this was the creation of LiveJournal in 1999. It was created to facilitate an exchange between friends serial way. Another company called Cyworld in Korea added some social networking features in 2001. This was followed by the lunar storm in Sweden during the same year. These include things like newspaper pages and buddy lists. In addition, Ryze.com also established in the market. It was created to link the businessmen in San Francisco. The company was under administration of Friendster, LinkedIn, Ryze and Tribe.net. The latter company was the least successful of all others. However, Tribe.net specializing in the business world, but Friendster initially did well, it did not last for long. (Cohen, 2003)

The remainder of this essay will examine the manner in which these private companies formed.

Friendster

Friendster began operations in 2002. She was a sister company but was designed Ryze to deal with the social aspect of your market. At first, there was an exponential growth of the Meet. This was especially after the introduction of the network for gay men and increased the number of bloggers. So the company lost enthusiasts such. began mounting technical problems and there were many social conflicts. Users lost confidence in the company and began to collapse. (Boyd, 2004)

MySpace

By 2003, there were many companies formed for the purpose of providing a social networking service. However, most of them did not attract much attention especially in the U.S. market. For example, LinkedIn and Xing are formed by business, while services like MyChurch, Dogster Couchsurfing and formed for social services. Other companies that had been performing other services began offering social networking services. For example, YouTube and Last.FM originally formed to facilitate the exchange of music and video, respectively. However, the initiative adopted social networking services. (Backstrom et al, 2006)

MySpace realized that there was a growing demand for the service and entered the market in 2003. The company was formed to host some Friendster users of those expelled. For example, bands and other frustrated users. The bands were particularly interested in MySpace, but provided a platform for the growth of the company. Promoters in the U.S. using MySpace to advertise upcoming concerts. On the other hand, fans had the opportunity to reach their stars and the company began to grow. T first was through word of mouth. This was especially after rumors began flying that Friendster would begin charging for their services. (ComScore, 2007)

MySpace grew rapidly due to the personalized services based on what customers were looking for. In addition, the company Friendster restrict not made public. The teenagers can join the company at will. bands were the main attraction of these sites as friends spread the word around. However, this lack of restrictions caused problems for the company later because there were cases of child abuse. However, the company did well after to obtain recognition media sources as in 2005.

Over time, other social networking services entered the market, although most of them did relatively well on non-English speaking countries. Some of them are of Orkut in Brazil, Lunar Storm in Sweden, Grono in Poland and Cyworld in Korea South. (Choi, 2006)

Facebook

This network service was introduced with the purpose of linking the University of friends Harvard in 2004. Since then, the company expanded to other universities, then schools. Finally, they invited corporate communities. But this does not The profiles that can be interchanged at will. There are lots of constraints among the friends who join universities in the network because they have to be. address education. Also, join the network operators should also have the attachment. Com. Conclusion

The social networking services began with the intention to link the small communities. The elements of these features were present in past societies, but very few offer the three essential characteristics that make social networking sites. This is an opportunity to create profiles, provided the profiles of other users and also to view lists of their users. All network services companies have had major differences due to restrictions or access to the three characteristics. MySpace and Facebook one of the most reputable companies in the industry. However, they have had their share of the legal claims as well. This is especially in cases where restrictions were maintained to a minimum or were exaggerated. (Cassidy, 2006)
