Tips for creating musical magic in the studio

After recording my new CD Sacred Love with Grammy Award winners Will Ackerman (Producer) and Corin Nelsen (recording and mixing engineer), here are 6 ways to secure music making magic happen in their next recording session and take the CD to the next level.

1. Make a budget and stick to

Records cost a lot to do. If you are recording in his home studio, you've probably spent thousands of dollars for a computer, software, interfaces audio, speakers, microphones and musical instruments. Whether you're recording your CD at home or work with a producer in the independent study, you want to budget and stick to it.

My budget includes fees for the producer, studio, travel, music, mastering, public relations and promotion radio, duplication and distribution. Make sure you know what you expect to spend more and how much time, so you can raise the money.

Producers are paid by the hour or by the song, or a personalized, more points in a song. If you are a co-production, you can split the points.

2. Surround yourself with the best

As an acoustic guitarist and composer of music conscious I approached the legendary producer and guitarist Will Ackerman, who I felt had the experience and knowledge to help me bring my music to the next level. As the founder Windham Hill Records, a creator of talented acoustic guitar music, and producer of artists like George Winston, Michael Hedges, Alex Degrassi, Shadowfax, and Jeff Oster, Will brought his vast experience and a unique sensitivity to my recording project.

His own imaginary Road Studios in Windham County, Vermont also custom features state of the art microphones and preamps that helped make me sound my best. Grammy Award-winning engineer, Corin Nelsen is the record resident and mixing engineer. In Imaginary way I felt comfortable, because the study is found in nature in 100 acres of beautiful woods of Vermont broad. So was in a great place filled with people from production achieved, and I was able to concentrate on creating music that needs to create for recording.

3. Prepare

Preparation in the study means that you are making efficient use of costly and time of study. If working with a producer meet before you get into the studio to discuss and agree upon a game plan for recording. How long will it take per song, How many days in total in the studio recording and mixing, the musicians Are you thinking of adding to the tracks, and when you're programming sessions, etc.

If you are bringing musicians to play on the CD, writing lead sheets and chord charts beforehand. And the practice of his songs. Make sure your own interpretations are so tight that you can offer the best in the study of the first shot. Practiced the songs from my CD, and recorded in my home studio, by what might work well in a similar study. It really helps to be prepared and most likely save money as a result.

I was very impressed when my musicians contacted me before the session for copies of sheet music and recordings, to practice. Tony Levin plays bass on five songs and I was fully prepared.

4. Time Construction Process

I set about 2 weeks between the recording of the guitars on Sacred Love, and layers of other instruments. That gave me time to get familiar with my own interpretations of the songs on "Sacred Love." Thereafter I heard two melodies play specific instruments, leads and harmonies in recordings, and we had time to align the instrumentalists.

Building in time for reflection was necessary for ideas to form, crystallize and then emerge. We've added violin, drums, cello, bass, sarod and other instruments, and sought out the most sensitive musicians to create with us. These artists included Eugene Friesen on cello (called the Spirit, the edge of the Eternal Revelation), Jill Haley on English horn (edge of the Eternal Revelation) Tubbs Premik in windsynth (Together) and flute (Nirab Amare), Ravichandran Kulur on flute (called to the humility and spirit), Jeff Haynes (percussion), Celso Alberti (drums) and Todd Boston (sarod).

I also plans to close two weeks after the last recording session and mixing of the session. And then two weeks between the end of the mixing and mastering, and mastering a few days before we made the 'final' final adjustments.

5. When finished recording, then it is not Post-Production

Congratulations … recording has finished. Now you have to think about the domain, the cover design, duplication, copyright, digital rights management, etc.

Mastering adds the Simonize to 'shine' the recording. A good mastering engineer can match the volume and tone of the different ways to make your tracks soundåßß as belonging to the same album. I was fortunate to work with Adam Ayan, the Domain Engineering Gateway Mastering in Portland, ME, and Corin Nelsen was responsible for making sure we have the sound to perfection. Most important duplicators offer services to dominate for 10-20 percent of the cost of a gateway. If you can afford the best, definitely get your money's worth.

This includes cover design and CD art, writing of a booklet or insert and sleeves inside and out, and can also help establish the electronic distribution on iTunes, Amazon and other online retailers.

6. CD Done? You are in the beginning.

When you finish your CD in hand then you are on line to look again. Now comes the challenge of promoting and engaging listeners and buyers. And you might want to help. There are people who specialize in radio promotion, public relations, media, social media and retail distribution. If you have the cash and budgeted for the experts, are rented now. And if you want to get your songs in the major chain stores, work with a music distributor that can help.
