Question on software license after reformating?
If I buy a software program, and install on one computer(The license for said software is for one computer only), and if I had reformat would I still be able reinstall and use on that same computer? I assume that I could, but figured I would ask.
Legally speaking, the answer is “probably, yes.”
On occasion, software companies will restrict their applications to a “single, one-time load.” This, in my opinion, is impractical and typically causes more problems than it solves.
Along the same lines, the security protocol built into a software application may cause you problems.
For example, if you already loaded the software using a key, and that key was “activated,” the software company’s key-server may not allow you to reactivate the same key. In which case, you should be able to simply contact them, and explain exactly what you said above… “I’ve reformatted my drive, and need to reload the software.”
Adobe is infamous for this type protocol.
I personally format and wipe my computers once every 6 – 12 months… just to keep them running smooth, and fast.
Being that I’m in the business of software-copyright law and compliance, I am VERY up-to-date on my licensing, etc.
And… all of the software I reload, loads without a hitch (even my Microsoft products, amazingly)…
except one…
Adobe Photoshop… which gives me a fit, and basically insinuates that I am a “liar” every time I try to reinstall.
Thus… I have to call Adobe… and have them “allow” my application to load… (Which infuriates me every, single time.)
If you have paid for a proper license… and you are legitimately loading the software on a single computer (or however many computers for which you are licensed), you should have no problems.
