3 Types of data storage media: – Guide to Selecting media for storing and backing up computer data
Data or information stored on your computer, or it can be seen in the hard drives inside the computer or removable media like CD's that can be inserted and removed. Removable media can be used to transfer files between computers or backup existing data on hard drives. There three types of removable media, magnetic optical, and Flash.
Magnetic storage
Hard disks, floppy disks, magnetic storage and digital audio tape are examples of magnetic storage. Work through a read / write head, which creates and reads magnetic impressions on the disk.
The downside …
• The magnetic printing only lasts about five years
• The capacity of most disc magnetic pull is too low for many types of files
Optical Storage
Bodegas optical information storage digital format that is written and read by a laser. All CD and DVD devices are examples of this.
The positive side …
• Increase capacity: an optical disc can store the same amount of data, more than 500 floppy disks
• Durability: they last up to seven times the storage forms magnetic
Flash memory (Solid State Removable Storage)
solid state memory (or Flash memory) is a device high-performance plug-and-play storage that contains no moving parts. It is in digital cameras, gaming consoles and digital audio players. The can be used as USB flash drives to transfer data or backup. Flash memory is small, light and fast.
Backup
Backup is the copying of files on portable media, so if your computer crashes, data can not be lost in oblivion. Backup is usual in large companies, but often neglected by individual users. Some suggest backing up data files and double the hard drive every week. It takes about 45 minutes backup hard drive 500 MB.
There are two options for local backup or the Internet. The following is a list of options for local backup. Most these also serve as devices used to transfer data between computers.
• Diskettes
• Zip drives
• CD's
• DVD's
• Flash Drive
Internet Backup
Another option is to send your backup files to an Internet site for safekeeping. If your computer crashes you can simply download from the site. Here are some examples of these sites:
Backup Defender www.backupdefender.co.nz
My backup / www.mybackup.co.nz
NB The author does not recommend or endorse any of the above service providers.
Floppy and Zip disks
Floppy
A 3.5-inch floppy disk is removable magnetic disk. The previous version, the disc is 5.25 inches square and flexible. Copying a floppy disk is fast and economical.
Ideal for …
• Those who use their PC for personal finance – the floppy disk that allows restore the balance a checkbook, etc.
• Projects must be continuously backed up as a film script, as it is a cheaper alternative.
Not so good for …
• Some newer models and laptop that does not have a floppy or hard drive installed.
• Large amounts of data as diskettes do not have a large storage capacity
Zip Drives
A Zip drive is a small square-shaped magnetic disk is ideal for Back up your PC. The size of 100 megabytes is the equivalent of 70 floppies. They also come in a size of 250 megabytes
Ideal for …
• Duplication of the entire disk drive
• Archive
• Storage of graphic images and other large files
• Transfer large files
• Keeping certain files separate data on the hard disk
The downside …
• Seem be a fleeting technology – most computers do not have a Zip drive installed and opinions vary on the time it will be around.
Albums Compact
There are different standards of CD's that have different capabilities. Just to confuse us are known for seemingly similar acronyms, CD-R, CD-RW, CD + RW, DDCD and E-CD.
CD-R
CD-R (Compact Disc – Recordable) is a CD that can be recorded once. Usually has 74 minutes of audio or 650 MB of data, although the latest versions for 80 minutes of audio (700 MB of data). If your PC has a CD recording software and compatible with CD-R or CD-RW, CD-R can be used in the same way as a floppy disk. However, unlike a floppy disk that can not be deleted or overwritten. Look out for CD-R that have an extra layer of protection make them less susceptible to damage by scratching.
Ideal for …
• Making music CDs
• Photo Storage
• Permanent storage of data
Not so good for …
• File Transfer, and that can only be used once
CD-RW/CD + RW
A CD-RW (compact disc recordable) and CD + RW can be recorded as many times as desired. The data can be overwritten and deleted. Apart from this, CD-RW is identical to that of CD-R. If not for their limited durability of CD-RW and CD + RW can be reused endlessly.
Ideal for …
• Transfer File
• If you hold temporary data
Not so good for …
• If you keep important files permanently if they are deleted accidentally
Double Density CD (DDCD)
This album has a much greater storage capacity than an average CD-R or CD-RW.
Ideal for …
• Backup
• Storage of data files
Enhanced CD
Enhanced CD (CD-E) is an audio CD with CD-ROM data added. Data CD-ROM is inserted in the space not taken by the audio. recording artists can use this to include videos, lyrics, interviews and promotional material. The E-CD can be played on a CD player, but to see additional material needs access to a multimedia capable device such as a CD-i player, DVD-ROM or CD-ROM.
Bridge Records
A CD-Bridge has additional information about a track from CD-ROM XA. The disc can be played in any CD-i player connected to a TV or a unit CD-ROM XA connected to a computer. Software such as photos or a Karaoke CD player can provide a lot of fun with the album Bridge.
DVD (Digital Versatile Disk): More movies
While DVD's have become more associated with video, you can also store audio data and the computer, hence the name Digital Versatile Disc. Like the CD, a DVD is 120 mm by 1.2 mm thick disc. However, the DVD has more tracks on a CD holds many more data. CD has a storage capacity of 750 MB unchanged, while the DVD's store up to 17GB.
A number of acronyms is also used to distinguish between different types and capacities of DVD's. These include DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD + RW and DVD-Audio.
DVD-ROM
DVD-ROM (Digital Versatile Disc – Read Only Memory) is similar to a DVD movie, but is designed for computers. The DVD-ROM stores data in the same way that the CD-ROM does and is used in DVD-ROM drive of your PC.
The positive side …
• Expand your storage space – to store more data than a CD
• Can be filled with anything, the video data, music or specific equipment
• a core speed of 1.32 megabytes / second
The downward …
• Many older computers do not have a DVD-ROM drive installed
• Can be recorded once
DVD-Audio
DVD-Audio (DVD-A) is designed for audio and music data quality. Its storage capacity is seven times that of a CD and offers at least twice the sound quality. Like the enhanced CD, DVD-A may contain other data, providing the listener with extra information such as letters or pictures. DVD-A is expected by many to replace Standard audio CD in the music industry.
DVD-R
Like the CD-R, DVD-R (Digital Versatile Disc-Recordable) can be recorded once.
The positive side …
• A DVD-R can contain a variety of information, video, text, audio and data
• A DVD-R can play on your normal DVD video, but remember, if you are not the same additional data formats such as video and audio together, you need DVD-ROM or any media player
• A DVD-R is read at the same rate as the market made DVD's
DVD-RW and DVD + RW
Similar to the CD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD + RW (Digital Versatile Disc – Rewritable) can be recorded, erased and rewritten many times. Apart from this, an identity with DVD-R.
DVD less and more are just different versions with the same functionality.
The future of storage, CD / DVD
Most industry Technology predicts that soon DVD's, with its larger storage capacity and faster access time, will replace CD. the DVD-ROM is likely to be sold with new systems in the way the CD-ROM, once were. But we are always on the cusp of new technologies, as the HD-ROM.
HD-ROM (High Density-Read Only Memory)
HD-ROM uses a particle beam to write data more precise. This allows information to be written in more durable materials like metal that is virtually permanent storage. HD-ROM has hundreds of times the storage capacity of CD-ROM.
Flash Drives
A Flash Drive is a small, portable memory stick containing anywhere from 1MB to 1 GB of data. It is surprisingly light and often worn around the neck or worn as a funky keychain. Are compatible with any PC that has a USB port and Mac OS 9 and OS X, Windows 2000 and XP or Linux 2.4.17.
The positive side …
• Durable – more than CD's or DVD's
• No need for batteries or a separate power supply
• Convenient – the computer must recognize the additional drive as soon as it is inserted into the USB port
• Ideal for backup
• Storage Capacity larger than many other portable devices
• More portable than ZIP drives, CD and floppy
• Fast transfer (Approx. 1Mb/sec)
• Edit, rewrite, delete as many times as desired
• Support service staff can use flash drives as a set of tools portable system that includes updates and recovery tools.
The downside …
• More expensive than other portable devices
• Virus – The portability and compatibility of Flash Drive increases the potential for spread of virus. In many cases, the virus carried by a flash drive not be detected as most antivirus software is reactive and only recognizes known viruses
• Theft – a Flash Drive can provide the data to be stolen from a PC release
• Lack of security – the size and weight of the flash unit makes it very easy to lose. Most have little or no security measures and data easily accessible. Some flash units have built in security, a password or in some cases a fingerprint system – but this has a price.
