As a team of backup software Maxtor external HD not included?

I bought a Maxtor external hard drive but it came without software. I can connect to my computer but do not know what to do to make sure my computer is back up on it. Please help. Do I have to download a program? I know how to drag and drop things to save, but how I can make sure all my hard disk is a backup on it? Thanks

If you hooked your Maxtor external hard drive: 1. Double-click "My Computer" 2. Check your drive letters showing. C: = primary hard disk partition where your operating system. D: = a. partition backup restore factory. b. Its exterior hard drive NOTE: Right click and choose Properties to see what space is disk and is used and what is free.
