Computer backup / playback software?

Is there a program out there that let me back up and restore all equipment in a new hard drive? For example, say I have a virus I can not remove and I want to reinstall the operating system. Is there a program that allows me to save my computer and everything in it (programs, music, photos, etc, unless the virus) and transfer back to the new hard disk? I've heard of Norton Ghost, but I'm not sure if that's what I need or if there is a better program out there?

Yes Clonzilla works very well and needs much less RAM to run. I love it and it's free. We use for ghosts of the machines in the school where I work. It's a little intimidating to use, but equally powerful and less errors. Less virus, though … No. .. Do not think you have the option of reducing that amount.
