10 Great Free Software Programs and Applications (OK some of them are software cheap!)
If you're like me, are curious about software and applications that were not originally included with the computer and find an endless array of relatively cheap or free software offered online. These are my 10 favorites which are indispensable to me. I have divided into two categories: Free Software and Software flights.
Free Software Applications I Love:
Auslogics Registry Defrag Auslogics Disk Defrag and – in fact there are two major open source applications – I've cheated and counted as a single! Auslogics Registry Defrag quickly covenants and optimizes Windows Registry equipment by removing gaps and wasted space outside that can improve performance. Auslogics Disk Defrag accelerates quickly and eliminate computer crashes by defragmenting the file system.
Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile private of computer software and hardware along with missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, and landmarks Internet Security. The results are shown in web browser. All your profile information is kept private on your PC and not sent to any web server.
Mike's Marketing Tools rankings search engine rankings provides immediate, online website in 8 major search engines and Web directories such as Google, Yahoo Search, MSN, AOL, AltaVista, AllTheWeb, Yahoo Directory and Open Directory (DMOZ). Excellent for anyone with a website.
Torrent Harvester search for Torrents on multiple websites and compiles them into a single list. Torrent Harvester works similarly to Google, but it is only for Torrents. If you click a torrent in the list from a website torrent, the torrent is downloaded without leaving the page.
VLC Media Player – I prefer VLC Media Player for Windows Media Player, since it seems to play other media formats (without adding more codecs) and for some reason seems to sound better in my team and (maybe this is my imagination!). VLC is a portable multi-media platform to support a large number of multimedia formats need additional codecs. Features including video on demand and on the fly transcoding.
Download VLC Player to compare and see all its features and playable media.

The Keck Telescope Model Kit $18.95 The Keck Telescope To get an idea of the scale of this giant Earth-based telescope, notice the tiny railings surrounding the central hexagon and its jutting platforms. They’re a little taller than waist-height. The twin Keck Telescopes, on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, are indeed huge. They each have four times the light-collecting area of the 200-inch Hale Telescope on Mount Palomar, which, until Keck, was the world’s premier astronomical telescope. Builders of the massive Hale had reached the limit of their technology. A telescope of Hale’s construction having 4x its light collecting area would have had about eight times its mass – technically and financially an impossibility to construct. But the Keck Telescopes are not massive behemoths of the old school. Their use of computers, and highly advanced mechanical and systems designs have introduced a new paradigm. This Space Craft SCIENCE KIT shows exactly what that new paradigm is. As you build the structure, you see first hand how strong the lightweight structure becomes by virtue of its design. You see exactly how all 36 lightweight mirror segments are floated by computer-controlled actuators which maintain the overall mirror’s perfect shape. And you can see exactly where the sensors are that let the computer do that. You see how stable its mounting system is (Keck uses a computer-controlled azimuth-elevation mounting system, a departure from the equatorial systems of older telescopes, with their asymmetric load bearing). All these concepts become perfectly clear, right at your fingertips. But let’s go back to those waist-high railings. The scale of this model is close to the model-railroad “N” guage, so it isn’t hard to find tiny plastic human figures or vehicles which, when displayed with the Keck model, illustrate its startling size. |

NOVA – MARS, DEAD OR ALIVE $19.95 The great PBS science series Nova scores another hit with Mars: Dead or Alive, capturing all the excitement surrounding the Mars rover landings of early 2004. Originally broadcast just as the first of the twin rovers (“Spirit” and “Opportunity”) was experiencing temporary communication problems with Earth-bound mission controllers, this riveting hour-long episode chronicles the risky $820 million Mars Exploration Rover (MER) project from design to touchdown, dramatically illustrating (through the use of detailed simulations and sophisticated computer animation) the considerable chances of failure–a nail-biting gamble considering that fully two-thirds of all previous Mars missions never reached their destination. Through rigorous testing and initial failure of the MER parachute system to the celebrated transmission of pristine photos from the “Spirit” landing site, we see just how intensely complex and emotionally involving the missions are, especially for Cornell University astronomer and lead MER scientist Steve Squyres and his devoted team of colleagues at Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Careers are on the line as technical problems accumulate, and one feels the same mixture of dread, anxiety, and elation that accompanied the historic return of Apollo 13. A bonus interview with Mars-mission pioneer Donna Shirley puts everything into resonant perspective, celebrating science and the MER missions as an essential human endeavor. As with all Nova programs, the DVD includes a generous variety of study materials including an interview with Squyres, a detailed look at the anatomy of the Mars rovers, links to a companion website, and a “math activity” feature allowing viewers to understand the aerodynamic variables of parachute design. If you’re among those who feel that NASA and MER tax dollars are wasted, this DVD will probably change your opinion. –Jeff Shannon Special DVD features include: bonus video segment featuring Donna Shirley of NASA Interview with Steve Squyres Anatamony of a Rover activity Materials and activities for educators A link to the NOVA Web site Scene selections; closed captions; and described video for the visually impaired Actors: Stacy Keach, Peter Thomas, Don Wescott Format: Closed-captioned, Color, Letterboxed, NTSC Language: English Region: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only. The Conquest of Space $23.95 The Conquest of Space by David Lasser with a new introduction by Sir Arthur C. ClarkeDavid Lasser stands as one of the least-known but extraordinary pioneers of spaceflight. In 1930 he founded the American Interplanetary Society – the same year he wrote this book – the first book ever written in the English language to address the notion of spaceflight as a serious possibility. This book has not been in print since 1931 and yet it still stands up to scrutiny. The lucid style with which Lasser explains the basic concepts of rocketry make it a delight for anyone to read. Only a handful of errors creep into the text and all of those were based on the best information available at the time. The Conquest of Space is a milestone work of spaceflight literature and was state of the art in 1931. No space enthusiast’s library is complete without it. Here is what Sir Arthur C. Clarke had to say about The Conquest of Space… “My encounter with The Conquest of Space, soon after its publication in 1931, was one of the turning points in my life, and I suspect, not only of mine” FEATURES: Hardcover: 192 pages Publisher: Collector’s Guide Publishing Inc (September 1, 2002) Language: English Book Dimensions: 9.8 x 6.8 x 0.9 inches |

Kids to Space: A Space Traveler’s Guide $29.95 Kids to Space: A Space Traveler’s Guide In the interest of getting kids interested in science, math, space, ……..Lonnie Schorer invited 6000 students, in 99 schools in every state in the US and from Canada, to take an imaginary trip to space – each asking 3 questions prior to launch. This resulted in 18,000 questions, answered by 83 experts. So, this is: An art book: there are 146 student illustrations in the book and another 1000+ on the CD/ROM accompanying the book, set to Hawkwind soundtracks. A science teachers textbook: packed with science information in 94 different categories. A reading literacy book: a children’s story, in large font, precedes each chapter – introducing younger children to the material in the chapter in simple everyday terms. A career guide: a mini-bio for each of the 83 experts is included so that kids can see that one doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to participate in the space effort. An adult book: The average adult does not know 85% of the information in the book. It would seem an investigative expedition, where children think about tomorrow, learn techniques for problem solving to reach a goal, explore the unknown and express their visions for the future is, as an educational exploration, as relevant as a land-based expedition. It is essentially the first private citizens guide to space – generated by children. These children are our future explorers, and we need to encourage and reach them now.
