What does “Get display memory” mean?
I was trying to start a game called combat arms, it froze, I opened task manager and went to processes and looked around for a few seconds and my computer went to stand by after preparing to stand by. When I moved my mouse to get it off stand by I saw a program called get display memory on the bottom bar on windows XP, I think it had a symbol with an L in it or something like that. I might have accidently clicked on a link to a keylogger earlier today, but the link just redirected me to a website templates website and said the website had been removed. What does get display memory or something like that mean?
This is one reason that I now keep SEPARATE partitions. My desktop is extremely secure (compared to most systems).
I run XP on a 60GB partition with very minimal services – no theme, no networking, in fact if I turn anything else off, it can not load a desktop. I use this for playing games – nothing loads, so it’s fast to boot and does not need a virus checker or any other kind of software to run.
60GB is big enough for me to keep about 45GB of stuff, including games, defragmented after each major install/uninstall and cleaned up with ccleaner. After doing that, I take a snapshot using ‘Clonezilla’ which I save on my 2nd drive (500GB)
With the other part of the hard disk, I run Ubuntu – this is connected to internet and is completely safe to do anything else. I can play online games, I can install a few games designed for linux (though I’m not too keen on ‘desktop’ style games)…
You generally need about 45 seconds to boot to your linux desktop – and it takes just a little longer (but still only around a minute) to get to an XP desktop. Given that you play games for more than ten minutes at a time (joke…. maybe ten hours
) it is well worth keeping it separate and safe.
My games installation has not slowed or shown any sign of change in 5 months – and my internet installation with Ubuntu gets faster. Neither is threatened by the other (no malware will touch my games, OR desktop).
