I have to get my back up my external drive?!

I can back up my files on my computer's 320 GB external drive then restore my settings to their original settings but I have to go back and restore from the backup drive, but when I do that what I say to put on the last record, what I do not even use a DVD recorder that just use the unit??

Somewhere in the option you should see a "source" of the backup files. Just change to drive external.
