Types of Computer Memory RAM
Computer RAM refers to Random Access Memory; that enables the data to be stored in the computer and also to be accessed ‘randomly’ in any order without any constrains in terms of physical location and also the time at which the data has been saved previously. There is no limitation in terms of the accessibility and relation of one data to another and there is no hindrance to the access of data of any one day. One would not be required to go through the entire saved data of one day to reach the required data of another day. It is rapidly accessible and is right in front of you as and when required by you, that is, “any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes.” As against the Computer RAM; in other data storage devices like the optical and magnetic discs the data is stored by means of physical movement of the recording devices. The reading head takes longer than the data storage time and also the time needed to access this data is also longer than others; as the time depends on the physical location where the data has been placed.
Computer RAM; which is basically used in computers and printers; is basically of two types: DRAM & SRAM. DRAM stands for Dynamic Random Access Memory and SRAM stands for Static Random Access Memory. Both use distinct technology in terms of storage of data. The latter is considered faster than the former as it supports the access time of 10 seconds and low. Being faster it is more expensive as well. However; in spite of all the benefits of SRAM; it is not used very frequently by the people as Computer RAM is very volatile, which means that the memory gets lost when the power is switched off, therefore there is no point investing in something expensive that is going to be used temporarily and would not really have a major impact on the functioning of the system from the user’s point of view.
Again talking from a layman’s perspective Computer RAM is a term that is used to mean the main memory of the computer programs. In contrast to this ROM (Read only memory) refers to the memory that is available to the keep the programs that are used at the time of booting the computer. Although both RAM and ROM Computer memories provide random right to use, RAM facilitates in accessing and writing of data on the computer whereas ROM only enables to read the data.
