Computer viruses can spread in a variety of ways
For a virus or a similar program to have a big impact has to be able to propagate one computer to another. They are designed specifically to have access to parts of your computer system to allow communication with other machines. Then presents a discussion of some of the most common.
Start Infectors
All disk (hard disk, diskette, CD, DVD) contains a boot sector whether it is a boot disk or not. When a computer is on, look for boot information. If the team finds a disc boot information, you read that information and uses it to successfully start your computer. If for some reason the startup information is infected with a virus, the virus is activated and transferred possibly in the computer hard disk (if the infection was on a CD for example).
Once the boot code on the hard disk is infected virus is loaded into memory of your computer every time you start your computer. From memory the boot virus can travel to any and every disk that is placed on your computer. So is how the infection spreads.
Most boot viruses might be in a long time without causing problems, simply do not exist to spread. Often, these viruses are designed to turn bad behavior on a particular date (for Halloween, for example). There are some nasty boot virus that will destroy boot information or force a full format of hard disk immediately after entering a computer.
Infectors Program
When an application runs infected the virus is activated and loaded into memory. While the virus is in memory any new program file that runs can become infected. This means that there increasingly more applications on your system that are infected. Multiple infections are very common and no doubt will cause system problems.
Archives program can work without any problem for some time, but eventually will have problems or multiple infection brings down the entire computer system. Data the program produces may be a first sign of infection, such as saving files without proper names, or incorrect or incomplete data being saved.
The virus of this type are often designed to look for programs that are used to share information between users and computers, such as email applications, screen savers, office document macros, and self-extracting archives.
Through e-mail attachments
Many of the most dangerous viruses are the main spread through email attachments – files that can be sent, along with an e-mail mail. In such cases, the user of an infected computer unknowingly infected file attached to an e-mail, and then sends the mail mail to a friend or colleague. When mail is received, the virus is launched when the attachment is opened, thus infecting a new computer. email animations, automated greeting cards, jokes, photographs, spreadsheets and documents have all been documented to contain files virus.
More and more frequently these days of mass-mailing email worms / viruses are being released. These attacks automatically scans files from your computer to any email address it can find and then use your email application to automatically send infected messages to any email address found in any file on your computer (not just files emails).
It is important to be aware of the emails can be opened to ensure they do not contain harmful viruses. Even emails from family members and friends may have a virus, if that person's computer is infected. This is where an anti-virus software would be useful to detect if a virus on incoming messages.
