I was given a flash drive to try to free up some memory on my computer. What do i do with it?
i have never used one and know nothing about computers.
ok can someone be specific about what i am supposed to do with this thing? i don’t need to know what it does, i need to know how to use it. like how to operate it. “just drag and drop” means nothing to me.
Yeah, just open up Windows Explorer. You can find it under Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer
Who told you this? The drive probably isn’t big enough to make a difference in space. The biggest drive they even make is 32 gigabytes. It is doubtful anyone would give you one this big, they are pretty expensive and few people own them. It is probably between 1 and 4 gigabytes(those are the most popular sizes), but the question is: why would someone give you one this small to make space on your hard drive? Most hard drives are at least 160 gigabytes, so moving 1 or 2 off wouldn’t make much difference.
Now, if they are talking about giving your computer more memory, that’s something completely different. Personally, I didn’t even know you could do that. But according to the guy before me, you can do this in Windows Vista. However, I sort of know your computer situation, and only computers bought after jan. 2007 would be running Vista. Your computer’s pretty old, right? If so, then there’s no way you could use that flash drive to increase memory. Therefore, you can only use it to make space on your hard drive.
So how do you do that? Well, start out by opening Windows Explorer as I mentioned earlier. There will be a pane on the left listing the drives and folders on your computer, and the pane on the right shows you each file within that folder (don’t worry, it’s easy once you see it). Start out by opening “My Computer” by clicking the plus sign to the left of it. This will show you all the drives plugged into your computer, listed by letter (C:, D:, etc.) The main hard drive is always C:. This is where any letter you write, or song you download, or game you install is saved. The flash drive will show up as a different letter below C:. probably D: or E: it will probably say “Removable Drive”, or some name like that. Check the size by right clicking on the letter, click “Properties”, and it will show you a pie chart with the drive space. here you can check what size the flash drive is, it’ll most likely say “1gb” or “2gb” total space .You can drag files on the right and drop them onto the flash drive on the left. Here’s the hard part: I don’t know what’s on you drive and what can be moved off! It’s really something where I would need to be sitting in front of your computer. So, have a look around and see if there’s anything you remember saving in the past that you don’t need anymore: music, videos, documents, etc. WARNING: Don’t just delete “whatever” there’s important Windows files that must not be deleted or the computer won’t run right.
As I said, it’s hard for me to know what’s taking up space on your hard drive. I would recommend asking the person who gave you the drive for help. Maybe they would be willing to give it a shot
There is one final way, but the computer will delete the files for you.
From your desktop, click Start>Programs>Accessories>System tools>Disk Cleanup
Run that, select drive C:, and click start. It’ll scan your hard drive and show you which files are safe to delete. I would start by leaving whatever is already checked, but scroll down the list and check “Recycle Bin”. This should help a little. You can check how much free space you have on your hard drive by opening Windows Explorer (like we talked about), click the plus next to My Computer, right click on the C: drive, then click Properties. It will show you used space, free space, and a pie chart to show how full your drive is. This is a good way to judge when you need to move things to make room.
