Building a PC? Learn how to choose components and avoid costly mistakes!
Building my own team was one of my favorite projects. Customizing a machine to your needs, and self-assembly is always an awesome thing. However, there are so many different parts PC out there sometimes it gets a little confusing to know what you should buy! In this blog I will cover the basic PC parts, and how to make sure to pick up the components that play well together.
Buy pieces
First, you need a place to shop. If you have no computer store everything locally (like me), then you will to go online. That's no problem! Great selections, low prices and good quality if you know where to look! This is the only time they discourage buying on Ebay. If you do not know computers that may end up getting a lot of parts that are of no use to you because of bad seller it represents. Most vendors have a policy on the compatibility check – So you'll be stuck with the parties. My favorite online source of parts is Directron PC. Have great selection, low prices, reasonable shipping, and I've never been disappointed with them. There are plenty of other good places like New Egg, but personally I have not needed to buy elsewhere.
Motherboards
—————-
The motherboard is the heart of your PC. All other parts are connected to it, and given life. When you buy a motherboard that you need to make sure they work with all other parties. When looking to make a purchase ask yourself the following questions.
* This board supports the processor I want?
* Is it compatible with single or dual channel memory? Do you have enough slots?
* How many slots PCI I need?
* Is compatible with IDE, SATA, or both?
* How big is it?
For browsing the long list of specifications, You can browse until you have answered all these questions. Let's take this MSI motherboard for an example ..
Processors: Supports 64-bit AMD Athlon 64 (socket 754). Supports 2800 +, 3000 +, 3200 +, 3400 +, 3700 +. Supports Sempron 2600 +, 2800 +, 3000 +, 3100 +, 3300 +.
"This board supports processors AMD – To use an Intel processor will have to choose a table that is made for them. The numbers are the power of the processor – which will support a 2800 – 3700 MHz Athlon 64 2600 to 3300 MHz or Sempron. Make sure you buy the right socket thing you will find bad links! In the case of our example, we will get a 754. "
Memory: Supports two 184-pin DDR SDRAM up to 2GB of memory. Supports DDR400 * / DDR333/DDR266 DDR SDRAM.
"This board has two RAM (memory access random) slots. Support up to 2 GB of memory DDR400, DDR333. DDR266 and varieties. If you do not buy the right clubs that do not fit into the slots. "
IDE: An IDE controller on the VT8237R chipset provides IDE HDD / CD-ROM with PIO, Bus Master and Ultra DMA 66/100/133 operation modes. Connect four Ultra ATA drives. Controller Serial ATA/150 Integrated in VT8237R: Up to 150 MB / s transfer rate. You can connect up to 2 Serial ATA devices. Support RAID 0, RAID 1. Audio: 6-channel Audio VIA VT1617A codec software. Compliance with AC97 'v2.3. Meet PC2001 audio performance requirement.
"IDE slots are connecting things like hard drives, CD Rom, etc. The advice in this example we will use 4 ATA (IDE) devices. (Two. Cables tape to the plate, and two devices for each cable) This board also supports two SATA devices if you want them, or update in the future.
On-Board Peripherals: 1 connector floppy supports 1 FDD with 360K, 720K, 1.2M, 1.44M and 2.88 Mbytes. 2 serial ports (COM2 supported by pin-out). 1 VGA port. 1 parallel port supports SPP / EPP / ECP. 8 USB 2.0 (Rear x 4 / Front x 4). 3 audio ports in vertical (Line-out, line in, microphone). RJ-45 connector. 1 IrDA connector for SIR / ASKIR / HPSIR.
"This board also has ..
* Support for a drive.
* 2 serial communication ports
* 1 VGA port
* 1 parallel port
* 8 USB ports (4 on the back of the PC and 4 on the front)
* 3 audio ports (Line out, line and microphone)
* 1 RJ45 connector (input telephone line or similar)
* Jack IrDA (Infared Data Association)
The amount you want to invest in a motherboard is up to you. If you have everything you want and looks solid and then go for it. My main board costs about $ 80, had all I need, and so far has treated me very well. I have support for SATA, and four RAM slots, so you can upgrade later if I decide I want.
This particular board is a mATX (ATX) component size, so you have to make sure it fits in the case that we purchase. Otherwise the assembly, connectors, etc. may be off.
Processors
The processor does exactly what it says – that processes commands. The better the faster CPU then team will be able to give orders. Most people do not need a super high-end processor for everyday tasks.
Whether you want to go with Intel or AMD is really a matter of preference. You can listen to the struggles of the processor until your blue in the face, but I guess it's just something you have to prove yourself. Personally, I am an AMD user. Therefore, we will use one of our example.
AMD Sempron 2800 +
"Specifications: Processor: AMD Sempron. Model: 2800 +. Core: Palermo. Ordering P / N (PIB): SDA2800BXBOX. Operating Mode: 32/64. Step by step: E6. Frequency: 1600Mhz. HT Speed: 1600. Voltage: 1.40V. Maximum temperature: 69oC. Thermal Power: 62W. L1 Cache: 128KB. L2 Cache: 256 KB. CMOS Technology: 90nm SOI. Socket: Socket 754. "
From the description we can gather the information you need!
* We know that our motherboard supports AMD. So check!
* We know that support a 2800 MHz processor power. Check!
* We know that our motherboard socket 754 processor is like this! Check!
Well, this processor is compatible! To use a processor more or less powerful move on and see, Just compare the specifications, and ensure that it is be supported. Most processors come with heat sink, fan, etc.. therefore should not have to worry about that.
Hard Drive
Most of the work of this piece is based on a user's demand is, not compatibility. We will use this Seagate Barracuda in our example on this occasion.
Specifications: Model Number: ST3160815A. Interface: Ultra ATA/100. Cache: 8 Mbytes. Capacity: 160 GB. Areal density (avg): 101 Gbits/inch2. Sectors Guaranteed: 312,581,808. Rotational Speed: 7,200 rpm. Average Latency 4.16 ms. Random read seek time: time spent searching for random write
—————-
Maximum interface transfer rate: 100 Mbytes / sec. PHYSICS: Height (max): 19.99 mm (0.787 inches). Width (max): 101.6 mm (4.010 inches). Length (max) 146.99 mm (5.787 inches).
"This tells you something random information about the computer. The information important that we really need at this time …
* Ultra ATA interface (IDE) – If you did not pick a plate with SATA then you need this type of unit. IDE are older and not as fast as SATA disks, but will save you cash.
* Cache: 8 MB – This means you can store a value of 8 MB of data for a quick recovery. Save time for the things I use a lot, basically.
* Spindle Speed: 7200 – This is how fast the drive will spin – higher this number is the faster your drive will operate, and the faster the computer can retrieve data.
* Capacity: 160 GB – Bit of information more important! How much space should be taken up! Personally I am much needed in this department which has a 400 GB drive and still want to upgrade. If you have a lot of movies, music, games and files to choose a larger disk.
This is a standard 3.5-inch unit dimensions Real are not really important. Unless you are building a custom case, then you really do not need to measure anything like that since the cases are constructed to support this universal size desktop unit. "
Memory (RAM)
RAM or random access memory is what your computer uses to run applications. The things that have more going at once the more memory your computer will need to handle these commands. My computer runs 24 hours a day, and I have a lot of programs Idle, my 2GB of RAM not enough for me.
Let's take a look at this stick of 512 MB Kingston.
Specifications: Number Model: KVR333X64C25/512. 512 MB DDR 333MHZ 184pin memory, not SCC. Improved performance in mainstream PC100 or PC133 memory. Up to 2.1 GB / sec of peak bandwidth using PC2700 DIMMs (with DDR333 memory chips). JEDEC standard. Non-ECC 184-pin DIMM. DIMM Lead pitch: 1.27 mm. 2.5 volts. SSTL-2 I / O interface. CAS Latencies: 2.5. The support of the SPD.
"From this description, we can see that our RAM is ..
* 184-pin – Just what you need our motherboard.
* DDR333 (333 MHz) – What is compatible with our motherboard too.
* 512 MB – is fast approaching when there is insufficient memory. If you want to run Windows Vista you should opt for a bare minimum GB. If you are heavy applications would then go back for more if you can afford.
Case
A case is a lot of choice, but make sure you have parts that fit inside. If you bought a normal size card, then get yourself a case micro-sized. This case fit a standard or a micro ATX sized motherboard.
You can build anything from a small desktop PC, with a rack of servers in the same size as the floor. You must read the description of anything to look, as some come with more than others. You are looking for but here comes with a power of 450 watts. Note that anything that connects to your computer uses energy, and needs to be strong enough to handle one. Basic rule of thumb .. the more expensive (higher end) parts .. that the power vacuum. If you want a graphics card giant that occupies the entire case, does not skimp on your power supply.
Congratulations! You have all the important parts of your audience! I do not highlight something as CD / DVD, and should not be difficult. With the information you have learned about the rest of the components that should be easy for you.
