I have a fairly new Windows XP. After applying updates, the PC is running a lot of RAM, and why?

New XP install, works well, and then do the recommended updates from Microsoft and operates with a large amount of memory and RAM, it seems to use a large amount of RAM and cycles – increased memory usage, then back down after the surge, etc. Formatting my hard drive and use the factory installation installed, it runs quiet … Once updates are applied, the computer is running strong! Any advice? The fan running constantly drives me crazy … thinking to go to Apple. Can anyone recommend a good computer for me, either Windows or Apple.
