What method can I use to access Documents and Settings? I am getting conflicting information and need truth,?
I ran TreeSize Free Report in an effort to discover what was consuming the memory. Documents and Setting came out as 26GB with 22,439 files and 2131 folders. I have copied and sent documents to my external drive or simply deleted them. I would like to know where to find the 22,000+ files that are restricting my computer time.I have spent the past week trying to make space on Drive C!
When i clicked on properties on Document, I got 24.8 GB, 21,827 files and 2066 folders.Program Files according to properties is 2.89GB with 38,356 files and 2711 folders. This is not the truth as I have less than 100 Add/Remove folders. Downloads according to Properties is 631 MB, 184 files and 61 folders. What is a file? What is a folder? Why are the reports conflicting?
A file can be virtually anything. Files are usually in folders (but not necessarily, they could be simply on your C:drive by themselves). Folders can be in other folders (sometimes called sub-folders) Most folders are in a folder, which is in another folder, which is in another folder, etc.
To understand how it’s laid out, open My Computer (from your desktop or from your Start Menu) If you’re using Vista, it’s called Computer. Then open C:drive, and you’ll see Documents and Settings. If you have a Folders button on the Toolbar (below the line that has File, Edit, View, etc) click the Folders button to open a sidebar on the left that shows the Windows tree. (Vista may be a little different – I’m using XP) This is also called Windows Explorer.
The number of files & folders may not be wrong. The Add/Remove lists programs. Each program may have dozens or hundreds of folders. I wouldn’t be concerned with that.
However, I would be concerned about the actual size of Documents of 24 or 26GB. That’s humongous. Unless you have saved an awful lot of docs. Open Documents & see what you have in there. Actually open the folders & look in them instead of right-clicking & looking at Properties
