Can the Apple Remote control be used with a Windows-based PC?

A friend gave me a brand new Apple Remote control ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Remote ) that his office was just going to throw out. But I have no way to use it right now. I have 2 third-party iPod docks, and the remote works with neither dock (though each dock came with its own remote and each remote only works on its own dock, so I didn’t expect much from that direction). And I’m not interested in purchasing a Mac.
