Choosing Keywords – A complete guide
When beginning a Search Engine Optimization campaign, there are some basic steps that every SEO knows take before you begin. The first is always to build a list of key words there are different methods to do so. The right methods will help create and support a SEO strategy throughout the site. The wrong methods will run in circles, wondering what went wrong.
It is the intent of this Article to teach an effective method of keyword selection that will allow the land more keywords on the front page with less work.
Introduction: To determine the site
To create a larger keyword list, you need to know your website backwards and forwards. You should know what are the characteristics of the site, and not least, you should know that no 'property.
The first step is a rain of ideas a list of somewhat generic keywords. For example, if you're a shoe store in Poughkeepsie, the temptation will arise to try to classify the number 1 for the term "shoes." Well, that's a start, but the ranking of the word "shoes" is probably the goal a little too high for a mom and pop shop in Upstate New York, so it is very important that you know the site well enough to get a good list of pseudo-generic "modifiers" Your keyword:
* Location (Poughkeepsie shoes, shoes upstate New York, shoes 12 601)
* Price (cheap shoes, shoes affordable, quality shoes, walking shoes, etc)
* Types (shoes, walking shoes, jogging shoes, etc.)
* Industry specific (shoes anti-pronation)
Lengthening list
At this point you should have a good list of pseudo-generic keywords. The following step is to lengthen the list by using their favorite keyword tool (which will be using Overture in this example).
Each time you connect a keyword the tool of choice, return the number of searches performed for that period for a specified period of time. It also suggests keywords of the database tool is similar to that entered.
The basic idea is to go through the list returned by the keyword tool and copy of all and all similar terms, and the search for values that relate directly to the site you're optimizing. Then hit a spreadsheet program that can be edited later.
Once you have copied and pasted, just go to the list row by row. Delete keywords that are not have to do with the website optimization that (so it is important to know what the site does not count) and repeat with the following keyword generic pseudo your list. The idea is to identify as many keywords as possible.
Collapse list
So you have a long list of keywords, time reduced. I narrow my lists by deciding if the potential benefit for a keyword is relative to the competition. In order to make that decision, I need to know three variables:
1. The number of searches for a particular keyword (and I have the Overture)
2. The Amount of Competition (I'll teach you how to find jurisdiction in this section.)
3. Will the keyword lead to conversions (this depends on you)
Below is a method for determining background competition for various keywords:
1. Do a search for one of your keywords
2. In the first SERP find the latest ads with keyword in the title tag that is either a website of any kind or is a sub-page that is not associated with a domain whose PageRank is greater than 6. (This is page that is needed to overcome, if one does not exist, ranking will generally be easier)
3. Find out how many unique links with the keyword in the anchor text linking page has a PageRank of 1 or more for the competitor (This is the amount of quality backlinks you need to buy)
This is a detailed method to determine the competition for all keywords, and unless you are planning on building a tool that will automate this process, I would suggest a more general approach by using advanced search strings in the search engine of your choice.
The technique I'm about to show using the following string: intitle: "Keyword Phrase" inanchor: "Keyword Phrase." This string will return the number total pages in large part, the two major factors contributing to the ranking for a keyword:
* Having the keyword in the title Page
* Having the keyword in the anchor text pointing to page
It's a down and dirty method for assessing competition. So 3. Click on each link
4. Find and copy the number of pages the search engine for this query returns the top right of the SERPs to a new column beside the appropriate keyword in the spreadsheet list of keywords (this is your competition).
5. In another new column, divide the number of competitors the number of monthly searches for each keyword.
6. Sort the table from low to high (up) using this column.
What they have done is create A list of competitors to searches. In determining jurisdiction, they generally want the keyword to search in more times than there are competitors for that word. So the more the ratio is 0, the better the keyword.
These techniques indicate the terms that have the most competitive but competition alone should not dictate which words make the final list.
Keyword Design
Remember that selecting keywords: words in a more competitive level should be placed on pages that receive deep links in groups of 2 or 3, where all words are very similar, as
* Running shoes, running shoes and running shoes to buy online
* Web Design in Atlanta, Georgia, Atlanta, web design, web site design Atlanta
In this way, you do not have to remove very competitive but potentially lucrative terms of his list, as long as they make concerted efforts to carry out the creation of links to pages that reside in those terms.
For smaller terms, in my opinion, the more the better. They can do their own pages or other sites mentioned in great confidence in your site.
That's it. You must have all the information needed to select a strategically viable list of keywords. Remember, keyword research is the cornerstone of a successful SEO campaign. Know competition for keywords will help in site design and SEO focus effort only when necessary. In Ultimately, make your optimization process more efficient, allowing sites to rank for more keywords with less work, which is a goal that all SEOs strive.
