Can you advise me on a computer I’d like to buy?
I’m looking at buying this computer, and as my knowledge of technical spec’s is limited I was hoping for some advice:
http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0150202622.1198363161@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccckaddmlgdmljjcflgceggdhhmdfhj.0&page=Product&sku=289910
The spec is as follows:
# Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5250
# (1.50 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB Cache)
# Intel GMA X3100 Graphics Card Type
# 2 GB Memory
# 200 GB Hard Drive
And these are my questions:
1. I want a PC that is quick for pretty standard tasks such as browsing, web developing and playing games such as Football Manager. Will this do the trick?
2. What is an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor? Is that good?
3. Is a 1.5GHZ processor reasonable at present?
4. What does a 2GB memory actually mean? Will that affect speed performance?
5. Is 2mb cache good? Does that make the laptop quicker when I’m running more than one program?
Thanks in advance.
OK, the Intel Core 2 Duo’s are some of the best processors out at the moment. 1.5Ghz is an OK speed as well but if you are wanting to do any Tye of online first person shooter type gaming it is a little slow. By the sound of it though you do not plan on doing anything such as that.
Intel also at the moment is leading the way in performance over AMD processors, but for the price you may want to look at what AMD has to offer. If you were into the serious online FPS type games I would say stick with Intel but AMD may be a cheaper solution and still get the same performance you may need. Just to let you know I am partial to Intel for gaming but AMD is still good for other purposes.
The 2Gb of memory(RAM) is very good to have especially since the computer you are looking at comes with Vista. Vista is a RAM demanding operating system and 2Gb OS the minimum I would recommend, 3Gb would be better but 4Gb usually can’t be recognized by the 32-bit version of Vista or even XP, well at least not all of it, it will only recognize about 3.25-3.8Gb of RAM, somewhere in that range anyway. Also the RAM is 667Mhz which isn’t slow but not the greatest speed, 800Mhz would be better.
2Mb of cache is good but of course 4Gb would be better. Intel is releasing a new line of processors sometime within the next month or two and most of them have 6Mb of cache for the dual core processors and 12Mb of cache for the quad cores. So if it is possible to hold off for a while you may be able to get a better computer for about the same price. The new processors are not supposed to be expensive when they are released, at least not the dual cores or the lower end quad cores. The higher performance quad cores are a little pricey, the QX9650 has already been released and is Intel’s top of the line quad core processor and is priced at about $1,100 US.
The 2Mb does help in performance, it stores information that may be accessed later rather than the processor needing to get it off the hard drive it looks in the cache and if the information is already in the cache it will access it much quicker than needing to access the hard drive which is slower. Best way to describe it, someone else can probably do a better job at it or look under Cache in Wikipedia.org for a better definition.
Overall I think the computer will be good and suite your purpose. I just am not good with the price conversion. I am estimating it would be about $1,200 US which is a little high in my opinion.
