How to connect Sony DCR-HC26 to Windows Vista?

I have a Sony DCR-HC26 Video Camera.

The Sony DCR-HC26 is a miniDV tape based camcorder. You already know this. For best video quality (NTSC standard definition, low compression, DV format, video) miniDV works great.

To get to the video in the camcorder (miniDV tape) to a computer, you need a Firewire cable (not USB) to connect the DV port (not USB) on the camcorder to the firewire port (not USB) on your computer. You did not tell us which computer hardware you are using. Firewire, IEEE1394, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing.

USB will not allow importing high quality, DV format video. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things will not work. In this case – the USB connection will get you to the memory stick used only for stills. If your computer has no firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one.

You *could* use the camcorder’s AV-out connection to a USB-based analog/digital converter (see Elgato, Roxio, Pinnacle – Dazzle, Hauppage… lots of others)…

With the camcorder correctly connected to the computer (above) and in “Play” mode, launch the video editor in the computer and Capture or Import the video. It depends on the computer and importing software or video editor you are using. Many times the imported DV format video is saved to the video editor’s format – then, when you are finished editing, you render the finished project to whatever format you want – AVI, WMV, MOV, MP4… lot of others. It depends on what your audience needs to playback…

Windows is bundled with low-end, basically featureless, MovieMaker. Move up to Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Avid – several others.
