The first section of this paper is dedicated to all the techies out there who wanted to upgrade your Acer ended with a video driver error. Will discuss what happened and why it happened. If you are not a techie and just want to get the right to the solution, skip the first section.
Update Acer Aspire Windows 7 32 bits to 64 bits
Many people believe erroneously that can upgrade your Acer Aspire Windows 7 32-bit to 64 bit without any problems. They think that since the computer has no problem running of the 32 bits by simply changing the timing of heat and mean updated graphics processor.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. Substituting the 32 with 64-bit, which runs about 25% of the time. The other 75% of the time you get the dreaded blue screen of death with a Stop error. Will read something along the lines of "STOP: 0×00000116 error caused by atikmdag.sys."
The error is with the video card
You can try calling the technical service and support, but not going to do much good. The problem is with the integrated video card. The video card is simply not compatible with 64-bit system. Therefore, drivers can change and update the drivers all you want but it will not help much.
What you will need do is replace the video card with one that is capable of running 64-bit or switch back to the 32 bits.
Is Better than 64-bit 32-bit?
From a purely techie, the answer is yes. The 64-bit gives better graphics and better quality than the 32 bits.
From the average Joe point of view, the answer is not true. The average Joe will not be able to see a difference unless you run side by side. In addition, some products can not run in Windows 7 64 bit, while running on Windows 7 32 bit. Therefore, the average user may want to stick with the 32 bits for now.
Update video drivers
If you went the route of buying a new video card, then it should come with a driver installation CD. You can use this CD to install the video drivers. It should be as simple as placing the CD in the drive CD. If not, then the instructions should be written on the CD case or manual.
Update Windows 7 drivers
Update drivers for Windows 7 is a little harder. Since there are so many components, we recommend using the software update drivers. The software to scan your computer for outdated drivers and corrupt. Below is presented a list of drivers in the need to update. At this point, you are given the option to download and install what drivers you choose.
